Norwich castle Museum is a Grade 1 listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The customer had identified that the existing cabling and the display lighting in the dungeons was no longer suitable for continued use due to the constantly damp conditions. We were tasked to supply and install new cabling throughout the dungeons and to design supply and install replacement lighting. Because of the listed status of the building and the constant damp in the dungeons, there were specific requirements that we legally had to comply with.
- The cabling had to be black.
- The cable had to be Mineral Insulated Copper Cable (MICC). This is high specification cable that is fireproof and particularly strong but more importantly for this project, is completely impervious to ingress from water, oil and gasses.
- All fittings and equipment were to be black.
- New cable must be fitted where possible to the mortar joints between the brickwork and where this was not possible, alternative routes had to be discussed and agreed in advance with the curators.
- All cabling must follow the existing routes of the original cable.
- Light fittings had to be IP66 rated (waterproof) to provide illumination as required with emphasis on particular displays and exhibits
All the above requirements were prescribed by the team responsible for the conservation of listed buildings and had to be followed and any deviations had to be agreed in advance.
This was a challenging and interesting job forming part of much wider redevelopment project and we were proud to have been part of it.
